Case #9

Clinical data: Red black subcapsular liver nodule (0.8 cm) in a patient with metastatic malignant melanoma.

Frozen section diagnosis: Hemangioma of the liver.

Pathology and comment: Hemangiomas of the liver show different sizes. Large hemangiomas are easily diagnosed macroscopically. Cavernous hemangiomas have a sponge like cut surface and may contain extensive fibrous areas. In our case the small nodule was macroscopically very similar to a metastasis of the known melanoma. Histology is simple.
