Case #23
Clinical data: 60 year old man with a coin lesion in the right upper lobe
of the lung. No preoperative diagnosis could be established. Wedge resection
was made.
Frozen section diagnosis: Chondromatous hamartoma.
Pathology and comment: Chondromatous hamartomas of the lung are benign
processes that present differential diagnostic problems preoperatively. Macroscopical
feature is characteristic: firm, well-circumscribed white tumor which on
cut surface "drops out" of the lung tissue. Microscopically irregular glands with
respiratory epithelium and chondromatous tissue can be seen.
DD: Metastasis of
chondrosarcoma or teratoma.
