Case #2
Clinical data: 73 year old female with ileus. After opening of the abdomen several small (0.2-0.5 cm), white nodules on the serosal surface of the small intestine. Peritoneal metastasis of an unknown primary tumor?
Frozen section diagnosis: necrotizing giant cell granulomas, tuberculosis.
Pathology and comment: if tuberculosis is supposed, microbiological examination must be initiated. Our diagnosis was confirmed by microbiology later.
DD: We most frequently see foreign body type granulomas of the peritoneum after
former operation. Demonstration of foreign material and the different type of
giant cells makes the differentiation easy.
