Case #19
Clinical data: 18 year old female with thyroid cancer in the familiar
anamnesis. Cold nodule of 1.5 cm in the right thyroid gland.
Frozen section diagnosis: Papillary carcinoma (follicular variant).
Pathology and comment: Papillary carcinomas may be difficult to find in
the thyroid gland. Small, irregular scars, especially in an otherwise normal gland
are suspicious and frozen section must be carried out. Follicular and papillary
structures with invasive growth (perineural invasion may be helpful) help to
establish the diagnosis.
