Case #17
Clinical data: 74 year old woman operated on with subileus and peritoneal
adhesions
Frozen section diagnosis: Endometriosis.
Pathology and comment: Endometriosis can be found most frequently in the
bowel wall and urinary bladder but overall in the abdomen. Histological diagnosis
is established on the determination of glands and surrounding cytogenic stroma.
Remnants of blood in the glands support the diagnosis. In elder women the
glands and stroma may be atrophic and the diagnosis more difficult. It is important
to distinguish of carcinoma arising in endometriosis and of other carcinomas.
